A Short Guide to Cryptocurrency
The cryptocurrency market is like a jungle that grows more complex every day. Our goal is to take you by the hand, explain the essentials simply in half an hour and, if you decide to proceed, advise you about buying and selling cryptocurrency.
What are cryptocurrencies?
Cryptocurrencies are digital money created using block technology (blockchain), invented by an unknown person using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, who published an article about digital money online in 2008 and named it Bitcoin (bit-coin).
Created during a major global crisis, Satoshi presented the world with an alternative to centralized finance. Therefore, there is no single body controlling the monetary policy of cryptocurrencies: everything is decentralized and based on a community of miners who produce Bitcoin using electricity, while other people exchange cryptocurrencies as a means of transferring value—money.

Cryptocurrency mining
This is the process in which computer processing power is used to solve difficult mathematical patterns. Every time a computer solves a task, it receives part of a Bitcoin. Why is this necessary?
- Satoshi wanted cryptocurrencies to take hold and transfer value. As such, he looked to humanity's best-known store of value—gold. Gold also has to be mined. In other words, for something to have value, we must invest effort; in this case, that effort is electricity.
- The second purpose of mining is to maintain a decentralized money network, where every miner actually confirms the validity of Bitcoin transfers between people and is rewarded for it, keeping cryptocurrencies away from countries' central banks.

What are crypto exchanges?
Cryptocurrencies are not currently legal tender recognized by governments. Therefore, cryptocurrencies are bought and sold for “real money.”

Cryptocurrency trading
Trading takes place on online exchanges, meaning websites that connect buyers and sellers of cryptocurrency from around the world. It is a high-risk activity in which, on one enormous playing field, you try to buy a given cryptocurrency more cheaply and sell it at a higher price.
This is a skill built through years of discipline and belongs among high-risk activities. There is no easy overnight money here, and you need to be well informed.

Investing in cryptocurrency
Given that cryptocurrencies have gradually acquired the status of securities, although they remain lightly regulated, smart and cautious medium- and long-term investing can produce gains that are far from guaranteed. In practice, this means buying, holding and selling a particular cryptocurrency.
